Information About Denture Care
and Maintaining Oral Health
|
|
General Information
Since the mouth and the oral tissues change as time goes by,
dentures should be replaced every 5-7 years. Also maintaining
a comfortable fit may require you to visit your Denturist
periodically for adjusting or relining. We will send you a
recall card when our records show that it is time for a
check-up.
In The Beginning
Your new dentures may feel bulky at first. This is normal and
the feeling will go away with time. You will also experience
increased saliva flow for the first few days. If your mouth
feels sore or irritated call us and we will schedule an
adjustment appointment for you. Most denture sores will not go
away by themselves; we are here for you to help in any way we
can.

WE CARE!

Eating
When you are first learning to eat with your new dentures, it
is best to start with soft foods. Cut your food into small
pieces and chew slowly. You should distribute the food to both
sides and chew on your back teeth. Front teeth are for
smiling, back teeth are for chewing. Biting a sandwich can be
made easier by biting off to one side or the other. As you
become more confident try coarser and harder foods until you
are able to eat a more normal diet.

LEARNING TO
EAT WITH DENTURES TAKES PRACTICE!
|
Speaking
If at first you have trouble pronouncing certain words, don't
get discouraged. Practice reading aloud and success should
come quickly. Your Denturist checked your speech when your
dentures were "tried in" and any adjustment on your part
should be minor.
Caring for your dentures
For a healthy mouth and fresh breath, you should brush your
dentures 3 or 4 times a day with a denture brush and denture
toothpaste. (Don't use regular toothpaste, it is too
abrasive.) NEVER HOLD YOUR DENTURE IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND.
It should always be held on one side or the other or in the
center. This is a major cause of breaking a lower denture. If
your dentures should become stained a commercial soak may be
used for no more than 20 minutes per week. Handle your
dentures carefully! When cleaning them, do so over a towel or
a half-filled basin of water. Do not drop them onto a hard
surface, they may break. NEVER SOAK YOUR DENTURES IN BLEACH!
If your dentures dry out they will warp so when you take them
out at night, place them in a container of water. NEVER PUT
DENTURES IN HOT WATER!
Caring for your mouth
Even though you may have no natural teeth remaining, you will
need to take care of your mouth. Each day before inserting
your dentures be sure to brush your gums, tongue and palate
with a soft-bristled toothbrush or facecloth. This will remove
plaque and stimulate the circulation. You should always take
your dentures out at night as this gives your mouth a chance
to rest and helps you maintain your oral health.
Relines
You will need to have your Denturist reline your dentures
every few years to insure proper fit.

RELINE FEES
ARE NEVER INCLUDED
IN THE COST OF DENTURES!

Denture success
Your dentures will keep their shape if properly cared for, but
your mouth will continue to change over time. The ridges that
support your dentures can recede or shrink. When this happens
your dentures may seem loose and less stable and your ability
to chew will decrease.
Wearing ill-fitting dentures can irritate the tissues of the
mouth and cause the ridges which support your dentures to
recede to the point where wearing a denture may become
impossible. Regular visits to your Denturist can help to
prevent or correct these problems.
YOUR SUCCESS DEPENDS ON YOU!
With a positive attitude, patience, persistence and regular
check-ups you can become a satisfied denture wearer!
You should visit your Denturist regularly for an oral
check-up.
All office visits are by appointment only, we do not offer
walk-in service. |
